This year marks the eighth year at St. Bernard’s that we have read a book together as a community. Over the summer, faculty and all boys in grades V - IX read The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery by Steve Sheinkin. This year’s choice was a hit with all, receiving rave reviews from students, parents, and teachers.
On Wednesday, September 17, a special assembly opened with two boys sharing their takeaways from this riveting book about a complex character from U.S. history. Each student highlighted how, before reading the book, they had a one-sided view of Benedict Arnold as the most infamous traitor in our nation’s history. Upon reading this fast-paced biography full of adventure and action, they learned that before Benedict Arnold betrayed his country, he was a Revolutionary War hero. Mr. Sheinkin followed with details about how he conducted his research and wrote narrative nonfiction that weaves a story of battles, ambition, treachery, love, and political scheming. Aspiring historians were inspired and encouraged by this award-winning author.
